MILESTONES, Page 120
DIED. Virgil Thomson, 92, Pulitzer-prizewinning composer noted
for blending native melodies into a sophisticated structure, as in
his operas, Four Saints in Three Acts and The Mother of Us All; in
New York City. From 1940 to 1954 he was an acidic and witty music
critic for the New York Herald Tribune. "The way to write American
music is simple," he once said. "All you have to do is be an
American, and then write any kind of music you wish."
